SLF is the representative paint and coating organisation for the Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden,
Denmark and Norway) affiliated to the CSI (Coatings Societies International).
SLF translates to ”Federation of Scandinavian Paint and Varnish Technologists”. The federation was
formed in 1953 and consists of four separate national associations from each Nordic country.
The SLF organises every third year a coating and paint congress. The Danish association had the
honour to organise the 18th congress held in Helsingør, Denmark 8th to 10th October. All the major
paint and coating companies within the Nordic region are represented within the SLF examples being
Jotun, Hempel Akzo Nobel, Dyrup and Becker to name a few. The underlying theme of the congress
was "New spirits for development of future coatings"
The organisation invites raw material suppliers as well as coating and paint manufacturers to submit
new novel technologies to be presented during the congress. Companies such as Bayer DSM, BASF,
Rohm and Hass, Cytec Worlee and Cray Valley were all present and submitted papers presented
during the 3 day congress. The SLF committee prior to accepting any paper judge scientific content
with the most innovative and interesting paper being awarded their prestigious medal and certificate of
merit.
Nuplex Resins was awarded this prestigious award for their paper titled "New nano technology for
the elimination of knots discolouration and tannin bleeding from wooden structures coated
with a waterborne coatings”. The paper discusses Nuplex’s new nano technology based on the HTC
(hydrotalcite cationic clay particles) modified resins and their use in coating applications.
The paper was written by Derrick Twene and Dirk Mestach and was presented by Derrick Twene
